In general, there are five main column styles: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite.Three of them are of ancient Greek origin: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian. The types of Roman columns include the same layouts as those in ancient Greece.

The Greeks and Romans chose marble for their buildings because of its beauty, variety, ease of processing and long durability. At the start of what is now known as the Classical period of architecture, ancient Greek architecture developed into three distinct orders: the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns.

The Corinthian style is the most lavish of the Greek Orders. Corinthian style is more complex and elaborate than the earlier Doric and Ionic styles. The capital, or top, of a Corinthian column has opulent ornamentation carved to resemble leaves and flowers.
