The inlay of colourful stones on marble and sandstone (Kadappa- black stone) surfaces is characteristic of the Mughal period. It is said to have originated in Florence in Italy in 16th century, called “PIETRA DURA”. It was introduced in India in 17th century by the Mughals. The art of inlay is called "Parchin Kari". Its not a painting on stones.
